Recycled Rainbow Primer THIS WEEKEND!

What: Recycled Rainbow Primer
Where: Crystal Springs Campground, North Ridgeville, OH
When: 12 noon Saturday July 19 until 3pm Sunday, July 20.
Cost: $10 for land and porta-johns.

Download The Flyer (PDF)

Recycled Rainbow is providing an opportunity for Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio participants to gather and prototype their projects closer to home at Crystal Springs Campground in North Ridgeville starting at 12 noon on July 19 and ending at 3pm on July 20. A $10 donation is requested to pay for land and porta-potties.

Participants who are prototyping structures may arrive the night of the 18th (Friday night).

This event is open to the public and anyone interested in witnessing participants testing out their gear and prototyping their projects as well as joining in the festivities are welcome to attend.

During this event any installation or art piece including those using sound and fire can be built on a spacious 20 acre field nestled comfortably between the Ohio Turnpike and a very busy train track.

Electricity and water will not be provided so participants prototyping installations that require electricity and/or water must provide their own.

Entertainment will not be provided- unless, of course, you bring your own entertainment, which we assume you will. All rules for Recycled Rainbow apply at the Primer. While this event is not Recycled Rainbow, all information, preparation and guidelines are also useful for the Primer.

We look forward to seeing you in July!

Recycled Rainbow Seeks Freaks, Geeks, Art Cars & Human Stars!

(This message is posted on a few different tribes: Don't worry, you're not going crazy...or are you?)

Pyrophonicville (RR) -- Recycled Rainbow 2008 is looking like it will be bigger and badder than ever. Head gatekeeper and queen Mediaeval Baebe reports that there are many new ideas for 2008, and many new faces.

"We found some fantabulous land this year!" she said excitedly, jumping up and down and spilling her absinthe. "One of the gorgeous freak things has been working on an art car for a few months now, and there will be a burlesque performance Friday night. I hear they're seeking performers for it."

When asked about the term "gorgeous freak things", Mediaeval Baebe pointed to a group photo of people otherwise known as "burners", or "those lame ass drug addicted dirty hippies" according to Fox News.

"There are loads of ideas and shenanigans being planned for RR this year. I don't even know WHERE to begin." MB reported. "We invite YOU to bring YOUR thing. Here's the stage, now you have the freedom to show your stuff."

Recycled Rainbow will be held Thursday, September 25th - Sunday the 28th. Tickets are on sale now. To purchase tickets (and get more information), visit the website @ http://www.recycledrainbow.org

Can anyone help me contact a (former?) Detroit Burner named Mathew?

We both just returned from Pisco, Peru where we volunteered with Burners Without Borders (I'm the regional BWB coordinator in Oregon). We didn't get to say goodbye and have lost touch.

Mathew is a 20-something, short-haired musician/whatever with a huge smile and a bigger heart. His apartment building burned down the week before he left for Peru, and was considering moving to Chi-town upon returning to the EE.UU in April or May.

Any help is appreciated.

Workshop Weekend May 23-25

Here's the short of it:

May 23-25
Synctuarie
$10 pre-pay meal-plan (rhellemans2(at)gmail(dot)com) *
$5 at door for workshop

Workshops will be:
LED/Lighting
Yarn dying (Ann...is this correct?)
Hoop making and dancing

Also going on:
L3K work (come out if you're going out with L3K team this year)
SN effigy work
Burning Man virgin meet-up

*The meal plan covers meals for Breakfast and Lunch Sat & Sun and dinner on Sat. This is gourmet dining on a dime. Last time we had Pork Centerloin, cold green beans in a blu cheese garlic sauce, green salad with home-made mustard balsamic dressing. This fed about 20+ people for one dinner. We have delicious vegetarian fare as well. And as always, wonderful community member Rebecca purchases and cooks it all up for us. We love her, her cooking, and her generosity.

Howdy folks! I'm bringing you news of ways to help out Scorched Nuts by camping with friends and tickets changes and updates.

SN Volunteer Work Weekend
May 31-June 1
Hannon's Camp America

As we quickly approach the second year for Scorched Nuts (http://scorchednuts.org) we wanted to let you know of a way to benefit the community, the event, and the camping venue. Burners from IN, KY, and OH will be gathering at Hannon's Camp America (the venue for Scorched Nuts) from May 31st to June 1. We'll be camping out (free tent camping, $10 bunk rental if that's your thing), painting signs, digging post holes, building bridges, and ladders into tree houses. This work is mutually beneficial to the community and Hannon's. Come help us foster more community growth and give back. And as always is the case when Burners gather to work, we'll have an amazingly good time.

)*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*(

SN Ticket Changes and Updates

Hey folks, we've been looking over our ticket sales deadlines and have decided to make a couple of quick, and beneficial to the procrastinator, revisions. First, the deadline for mail-in orders has been pushed back to May 31st for the postmarked date. If it's postmarked after that you're check or money order will be sent back in the mail and you'll have to purchase your ticket on-line or with a vendor. Secondly, tickets will be on sale on-line and will vendors until June 12th. After that time you can purchase your tickets at the gate. Also, you have until midnight tonight to purchase a ticket for the $30 price, after that until June 12th tickets will be $40. We've also lowered the gate price to $50. All deadlines, unless otherwise noted, are until 11:59pm of the date listed. Also please note that there has been a gate policy change, there will be NO in-and-out passes this year. Be prepared to come and stay. You will not be permitted to leave and come back once you exit the gates. Thank you.

To summerize:

Mail-in postmark Deadline: May 31st for $40 tickets
On-line/Vendor Deadline: June 12th for $40 tickets
$30 Ticket Deadline (on-line only): May 12th
$40 Ticket Deadline: June 12th
$50 Gate Ticket Sales: June 19th during gate hours - June 21st at 5pm
No leaving once you've arrived.

)*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*()*(

Thank you all for your help and your patience. We hope to see you out at Scorched Nuts, or any of the upcoming events, gatherings, work weekend, etc that we have going on through out the year.

As always, be safe, be happy, and have fun.

Hello...
Though I'm rather brand spankin' new to everyone here, I have a request to put out there to see if anyone can help a student of mine. My name's Dave Early, and I teach technical theatre at Greenhills School in Ann Arbor, MI. I currently teach a young woman (Jen) who is an extremely gifted Yo-yo-ist and trick performer with the Chinese yo-yo. Each senior at our school gets the chance to spend a few weeks at the end of their time with us to conduct am exploratory research project of their choice. Jen's proposal for her project is to study the methods of safe fire usage in attempting to set her Chinese yo-yo on fire and perform a short routine. Towards that end...

Does anyone here know any fire-dancing groups in the MI area? Any pyros you know who you'd trust with your little sister? Jen could probably travel a little bit of a distance to talk with someone in the immedate Midwest, but she's not really looking for a cross-country jaunt just to learn this. Any ideas?

When: April 18-20
What: Costumery
How Much: $7 pre-pay for meal-plan *

* go to paypal to send your $7 to Rebecca, the Kitchen Queen, at rhellemans2@gmail.com Put "food" in the message so she knows where the money goes. If you don't have paypal then pm me. If you don't want the meal plan, then you'll need to bring enough food for yourself for the whole weekend. Only those that pre-pay for the meal-plan can partake of the delicious food that Rebecca prepares....it's worth MORE than the $7....especially for a weekends worth of food. Rebecca will post a meal list for you all to look over and "Yay" and "Nay" here soon.

Bring all your costume ideas. Bring those bits that you've been saving, but have yet to find a use for. Bring your sewing machine if you have one. Bring your yard and needles. Bring your questions and your knowledge. Bring those items that are just too plain-jane for your burner outfits. This time we're ALL the teachers and we're ALL the students....well...actually that's the normal bit....but still. We're going to be helping one another out, bouncing ideas off one another, learning little tips, hints, and tricks from those that do what they do best. Later there can/will be more in depth workshops on much of what'll be covered this weekend.

What to bring:
Bedding/sleeping gear
Costume ideas
Costume pieces
Snacks (not meal food)
Fabric (if that's your thing)
A glass/cup to call your own

Resonate - Chicago

Looks like our friends and neighbors in Chicago are at it again. Resonate 3.0 - March 29nd.

They have almost double the space as last year!

Also at this time they're sending out a call for people interested in helping out with this all volunteer burning community event. WOOT!!! So not only can you mark your calendars for a kick ass party where you'll meet a ton of fantastic fun people, but you can be one of the rockstars that help put it together. How cool is that!

Resonate was invented to bring all the tribes in the midwest together under one roof! And if the past two years are indication, I'd say that they've DONE it.

All the money (every penny) made at Resonate goes straight back to the community into a fund that supports other activities like, Decomp, Town Hall meetings, BRAF, Art grants, etc... and theirr full $ budget is completely transparent, and is sent out in detail to their announce list!
: ) (To sign up for their announce list send a blank e-mail to: chicago-announce-subscribe@burningman.com )

A call out to artists, performers, and volunteers will be made shortly.

I've just recently become interested in fire dancing, twirling ect. I live in Port Huron, is there any way to learn here, or do I need to go to Detroit? How did everyone learn? Was it self taught, or is there like an apprenticeship thing I can sign up for to learn from the pros?

Ann Arbor: : High Romance and Honest Seduction Workshop

Friday Oct 19th 7 PM-9:30PM
3200 West Liberty, Suite A, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Seduction has a bad rap. For most the word is synonymous with manipulation, deception and power-over practices. We're reclaiming seduction and rehabilitating it's tarnished name. Honest Seduction is cooperatively creating power and sparking healthy intimacy. This workshop will explore and improve your seduction skills including: pick up lines, interesting/exciting offers, difficult disclosures and writing love letters.

High Romance is the daring exploration of who you are and can be in your relationship with someone you care about. This workshop will guide you in discovering your individual and shared identity in current or possible romance.

Sabrina Burke is an irreverent advocate of radical intimacy and a facilitator of blindfold snuggles and other events for the Portland chapter of LoveTribe . She leads workshops for Network for New Culture and is the coach for the 2012 US Olympic team in flirting.

Paxus Calta is an unapologetic polyamory propagandist and incessant storyteller. He is the director of the Emma Goldman Institute for Theoretical and Applied Funology (the study of fun).

The workshop runs about 2 1/2 hours. This is not a lecture, rather it is highly interactive experience using small group work, role plays and individual exercises. There is a requested sliding scale donation of $5 to $10. No one turned away for lack of funds. This workshop is open individuals of all sexual orientations and relationship models. RSVPs requested (and questions happily answered) at paxus.calta@gmail.com or call 541-505-0803.

regional burn not too far from Detroit! Sept. 28th - 30th

It was recommended that I cross-post this here, seeing as how the location picked makes for a not too bad drive from Detroit or Ann Arbor.

It's a Cleveland-based event called "Recycled Rainbow", which started as a decompression house party many years ago, and has grown to an outdoors festival (mainly because we can't fit them in our house anymore!) Attendance is normally anywhere from 30 - 80 people, but now that we're moving it to a campground, many of our veterans won't be prepared for it. I suspect we will lose half our attendance as a result of this move, but the "show must go on" as they say. This is definitely a burner friendly event, and I'm doing what I can to make it an "official" regional burn. Trying to insure the land, get a regional contact present for it, etc.

The location is close to Warren, OH, about 70 minutes from Cleveland, and about 3.5 hours from Detroit.

It is the first regional of sorts that I have ever tried to organize. Looking for helpers, but the real big thing I'm concerned about is getting the word out and bringing in as many burners as we can so we don't lose money on this.

We're looking at probably a $15 ticket price.
Dates: Sept. 28th - 30th
http://www.recycledrainbow.org (not fully updated yet, most of the website relates to when it took place in a house)
http://www.myspace.com/recycledrainbow (be our myspace friend!)
Location:
Hide-A-Way Campground
4063 Eagle Creek Rd
Leavittsburg, OH 44430

The land provides 33 camp sites, all equipped with electrical and water, and there are bathrooms with toilets that flush, and showers. There is an indoor pavilion, and an outdoor stage area, fully equipped with electrical. There is a single entrance, only one way to get in or out.

We'd like to have on hand most importantly, an EMS medic, greeters, and a few volunteers to run the door.

Also need people informed about pyrotechnics, or there may be no burn!

There is a 30 acre clearing on which we can all camp, and many more acres of woods. There is also a fishing pond and a swimming pond (though it may be too cold to utilize either.)

There are no neighbors anywhere near this land for at least a quarter mile, and I will be meeting with those neighbors, plus their local police and fire departments and at least one EMT from their area to discuss this event and what we're doing.

Very much could use your help!

Can I count on any of you to join us? This will be a first for me!

love, everyman

Great Groove Revival Thursdays in the D

So I arrived back from the Bay Area California with a hard drive full of music from friends (all of them Burners) who don't care about labels but play all over the West Coast cuz they rock it and nothing makes them happier. I have friends here who know about them and never get to here it unless I burn a CD and they rock out in their car. Well, we have to do something about this, don't we!
Some friends and I are on a mission to transform the environments in which people are likely to dance in this city. Don't wanna pay $20 to be one of 18 people in a cavernous club with a sticky dancefloor from the night before? Wanna shake it on the dancefloor one minute and be able to talk with friends in the lounge the next? We've identified O Zen (formerly Buddha Lounge on the south side of eight mile between greenfield and lahser) as a perfect spot for this experience. It is nicely decorated and lit, small, intimate, has great staff and ownership and, consequently, great drink prices! Thursday nights are called the Great Groove Revival and it features some dance music you don't often here in the D. Please don't mistake this for obscure, esoteric quirk funk (ok, maybe a touch:). No, I'm referring to some great Drum and Bass as well as the other end of the spectrum (tempo wise anyway) with DubStep and Dirty California Breakbeats (not to mention great downtempo openers and a very eclectic track spectrum). It's all music that'll make you wanna grunt when you shake it. It's been fun for a month now and would love to see some new faces. It's $3 at the door and my girlfriend has '50% off your whole tab' discount cards (no lie). It starts at 9:30 or 10 and we're pretty done by 1:30 though a small group usually sticks around and closes the place (we even clean up after ourselves!). Come introduce yourself - it's an awesome crowd of people and we'd love to meet you! www.ozenlounge.com

Greening the Man Volunteer Opportunities

Yes, I've volunteered more of my behind the computer time to even MORE burner activities...hell, I've even volunteered more of my NOT behind the computer time to more burner activities. So here is a way for all you hella busy folks to either become even more busy.

First off, do you know anyone in the SF area that would want to participate in greening an event out here? There is one on June 10th, Prepare for the Playa (not an official BMORG sponsored party) however they would like to have a green team presence there! So if you or someone you know is interested, have them send Kachina Katrina an e-mail at: kachinakatrina@burningman.com

Here is the 4-1-1 to share with your lists:

Contact: KachinaKatrina@burningman.com for more information and contacts on these greening opportunities:

1.Environmental Section on the BM Website
Help spice up the Environmental Section on the Burning Man website in a 'resource center' with pages dedicated to: Materials, energy, lighting, gray water, recycling, re-using/salvage, composting, waste, the 6 R's, burning’ and more...
* We need writers, wed savvy people, and editors. Each of these pages will have: TIPS, FAQ, & RESOURCES

2.Cooling Man: Help wanted with offsetting
Cooling Man's mission is to unite art with science in the fight against climate change by sponsoring climatic artwork and helping participants understand and eliminate their climate impacts. To help support Burning Man 2007: The Green Man, and make Black Rock City the first 'carbon-neutral' city in the world, Cooling Man needs more hearts and hands. Please let us know if you'd like to help with this. Work on a project to indicate global warming- equivalent to one Christmas light per square meter across the planet 1 s mile of Christmas lights-in a ball that show heat. 1500 lights- (number I got) –check with Jeff Cole and see- Right now he needs help to-make a globe- it is a square meter heat project-

3.Resource Directories, wiki – ways to green the burn
Adding resources and insight on ways to Green the Burn. Which include but not limited to: Materials, energy, lighting, gray water, recycling, re-using/salvage, composting, waste, the 6 R's, burning’ and more...moving this information to the wiki (tech savvy people needed here!) and then getting this to the outreach team and the website team for the environmental section.

4.Communications, distribute information/ OUTREACH
Get the word out and updates on what is happening with greening Burning Man. Let people know where they can get involved, and share educational tidbits, and our resource directories with Burners around the world. You can also update the info for our wiki that will then lead into the Environmental section on the website. Help with our super sweet looking e-mail coming out, get this out to theme camps, participants, and your friends.

5.We will also have a 3,500 watt solar system ran lighting behind coffee bar, and some on the man base, we will need some help installing this. Efficient Energy solar was the company that supplied this and a month and 1/2 after the event these panels were powering people’s homes in Southern California. If we can get more than one company doing this, we can have multiple stations and more homes being solar powered! Power light is the company that is powering the man base. This is a great time to learn and contribute– however we can all gain a great deal by working together like this.

6.Composting
This is composting opportunity is for the ranch from the commissary (there place that feeds the staff). No for individuals or camps. One step at a time. We’re all here to learn new things and make things happen. Andy Man is a Resource and is down to help wit composting- their company can’t do anything- however he will help with signs and more. Our board members are into it, one even is researching more including mushroom composting and more- all loosing at this being a stream of revenue and decrease coast of hauling food waste away as trash. Goal: this can be an addition income stream, or can be a giant labyrinth. The neighboring ranch sometimes uses human waste.

7.Workshops and Coordination
Host workshops and/or coordinate the workshops before the burn and on-playa. You can do this anywhere... if you are in San Francisco you can use the Burning Man headquarters. If you live somewhere else we can help connect you to your regional rep. The workshops coordination involves scheduling and getting people involved in places to learn more about greening principals and the 6 R’s (Respect, rethink, reduce, re-use, recycle, restore). Coordinating logistics and people with ideas to make the workshops happen.

8.Transportation & Clean Fuels
Organize clean fuels transportation on and off the playa, and share this information with our education and resources information. Help organize transportation for the Burn... to and from the Play to Reno, the Airport, etc.
Work with the BurnCleanProject.org
OPPORTUNITIES FOR INVOLVEMENT:
* Contacting truck rental places, and see about bio-fuels opportunities
* Research
* Organize rideshares and supporting the existing BM rideshare

10.Chlorophyll Collective – help ‘em out!
The Chlorophyll Collective is creating a "greenhouse gas capture and sequestration from a generator's exhaust by photosynthetic organisms." They will show how algae can be used to "green" exhaust emissions from combustion-based power generators on or off the playa. Bio-diesel fueled is best for many reasons… however any kind will work with this project.
They have come up with a list of materials and costs, some of the key items are blower, high-pressure water pump, etc. to be donated-
something that the BM network might be able to help us accomplish this??
This list needs to get into the hands of industrial scrap folk who can help us get these materials for free or cheap.
Contact: Dr. Friendly himself, AKA Aaron Wolf Baum: drfriendly@drfriendly.tv

11.Biodiesel Ideas
2. How to do the conversion of a diesel engine to veggie oil in a cool way?
3. Bring in something to make bio-disel reactor-kiosk to show how it works. –everyday from 3-5 bring cooking oil and out comes fuel.
4. Who has an amazing display that talks about how biodiesel works?
5. Talk about Bio-diesel! A woman named Margot is making biodiesel, we'd appreciate a volunteer who is smart who can talk to her about her display. Envision aesthetic framework- Make it fun, do a song and dance!!

12.Informational Kiosk
Informational Kiosk...
3. People to help build these!

13.Grey Water education
Grey Water education, get the word out about best practices and more. Check out the Earth Guardian's Water Works project and share the information with the rest of Black Rock City!! This includes evaporation practices as well. please, work with Sarah directly on this. I'm sure she'd love to hear your ideas. Let's make sure that we are giving consistent information to participants about grey water options.

14.Baseline Environmental Report on Burning Man
One volunteer sought for supporting the production of a baseline environmental report on the Burning Man project. Must be a seasoned expert in gathering and compiling baseline information.
Contact Dr.E. directly at elizd@elizd.com; 510-776-1780.

15.Build Green Map of the city, and organize a "renewable energy tour"
Build Green Map of the city, and organize a "renewable energy tour" Much like the Media Mecca organizes the "art tour" for folks

16.How nature solves problems using Mushrooms and more
How nature solves problems using Mushrooms and more... What could Mushroom Man do at Bman? How about other things like this that could show nature solving problems? BMORG especially likes the angle of saving old growth trees in the name of national defense since certain mushrooms are the only known anti-nerve agent for nerve gases.

18. Administrational support
help get the details managed so things keep on target and we all stay sane. Help take notes and distribute them after the meetings, work with burners with out boarders staff and green team volunteer coordinator, a bit of data base entry.

HAVE AN IDEA and it’s not here, simply e-mail: KACHINAKATRINA@BURNINGMAN.COM and we’ll add it to the list.

Greening the Man

In 2007, we will calculate the amount of climate changing gases that are
released into the air by the construction and the burning of the Man and its
pedestal. This is called a carbon footprint. Then we'll sponsor projects in
the outside world that will efface this imprint. Such actions might include
the planting of trees or the development of non-polluting energy resources.
Having played with fire, we'll take care to cleanse its atmospheric
playground.

We are taking some radical measures to ensure that Black Rock City will be
the largest "Green" community in the world. These steps will all be covered
soon in more detail but this is the outline.

1. A Vehicle free Playa.
No gas powered vehicles will be parked within the perimeter of Black Rock
City. We will have an adjacent parking area approximately a quarter of a
mile away. Cars and trucks will be able to unload at camp but then must
park in the lot. Those choosing to come in RVs will have a separate RV lot
to park in. We will also be operating a number of bio-diesel fueled buses to
bring you and your equipment from the parking area to your camps. Art Cars
will not be affected by this.

2. People are the Power.
Another step we are taking is a power grid for all of Burningman. We will
not be allowing generators this year unless they run on bio-diesel or a
solar source. We will be providing a solar power grid for Burningman
assisted by a "power plant" run by the power of Burningman attendees. We
will have bicycles and "hamster wheels" that YOU will use to power all of
Burningman. We are still working out how access to the grid will be
provided and details will be given soon.

3. "Burning Potties"
We have reached a deal with Incinolet http://incinolet.com/ to use their new
waste system that uses a powerful heater and blower to reduce your human
waste into ash. We will provide participants with plenty of ash bags.

By starting with these simple steps we will continue to ensure that
Burningman is a proving ground for a better society.

http://www.toast-town.org/toast/page.php?9
There was some question about whether we have changed our policy on kids at
Toast. Children are absolutely welcome as long as they are with their
parents or legal guardian.
We do have an over 21 policy for this event which requires that you be over
21 if you are not with your parents or legal guardian or spouse who is 21 or
older.
We are serious about this. If you are not 21 or over and don’t fit the above
criteria you will not be let in. If you have questions about this policy
contact grover@toast-town.org

If you have activities or art that you want others to know about before the
event starts , drop us a note at
gary@toast-town.org and We will add it to the announcements. We know of a
lot of other things going on but if you don't give us permission, we wont
print it here.

Here is the latest!
See you there!!!
Organizers - Scotto & Rat
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guidelines for Travel to Toast,

Travel directions are at
http://www.toast-town.org/toast/page.php?3
The directions are detailed and correct and will get you to Toast as long as
you follow them. You need to print these directions and bring them with you.
Plus as always buy a good road map. Some online maps of this area are not
very good. Be aware there are no signs on the highway to tell you where to
turn for Toast! However, It is not hard to find as long as you follow the
directions.

We recommend buying food in Flagstaff if you are coming in from the west on
I-40.
Grants, if you are coming in from New Mexico.
If you are coming in from US-60 and Globe the last large grocery store is
the Safeway in Show low. There is also a small one in St Johns, neither of
those are open late.
The last gas coming south from I-40 is in Sanders Arizona.
Coming from Tucson or Phoenix, the last gas is in St Johns.
From either of these points it will be 50 miles round trip before you can
get gas again.
You will also need water. There is no water for your personal use at this
event.

We really recommend that you do not spend a lot of time lingering in St
Johns. This town is an ultra conservative community. Burners are going to
stand out big time. Trust us on this, they are not used to odd looking
people with Purple hair. :-) We’ve never personally had problems in St
Johns, but it is known as a speed trap. Drive safely and obey the speed
limit!

---------------------------------------------------------------------
The wonderful Elektra is looking for a ride to Toast from the San Francisco
area. We know this person, and we'd love to see her at Toast this year. She
is a lot of fun!

If you are able to help her out drop me a note gary@toast-town.org so we can
set you up.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pack it In Pack it out!
Leave No Trace at Toast.

It means just that. You are responsible for hauling away everything you
brought and disposing of it properly.
We do not provide Garbage service! This is a must, so make sure you plan
accordingly so you have room for your camp trash and debris.

Recompression - BC, Canada - April 6-8

Recompression 2007
http://recompression.com
Friday April 6th to Sunday April 8th

Camp Elphinstone - Sunshine Coast, BC
Tickets On Sale NOW

Recompression is an annual gathering hosted by the Burning Man Vancouver community. We are inspired by, and share values with, Burning Man. We create a Temporary Autonomous Zone (TAZ) that we, as participants, share responsibility for building. Our community experience features a Burn celebration, music, art, performance, workshops, theme cabins, fire-spinning, ritual, gift-giving, experiential communication and friendship. We celebrate Recompression in an oceanside rain forest setting on British Columbia's beautiful Sunshine Coast. We are an active, friendly and diverse community, and we've always warmly welcomed Burners and other like-minded folk from around the world. Include yourself, include others!

Okay, we admit it: Recompression is "Burner Club Med" - all food is included in the ticket price, plus accomodation in heated cabins! It's Canada, and it's April - it's cold! Not so much "Radical Self Reliance" - more like "Radical Self Indulgence." Admittedly the bunks in the cabins are designed for kids (It's aYMCA summer camp) but they do have heat. Capacity is only 275 people, so act fast.

Initially, it seemed the New Year might bring a lull in the action. Not a chance! 2007 is shaping up to be another year of amazing opportunity.

2007 Grant Cycle is OPEN!
ScrapEden SF Grant Review is underway
The Detroit Dream Temple
Quadrapass U.S.A wants you!
ISO: Volunteer Web Master
Bay Area Events
On & Off This List

1) The 2007 Grant Cycle is OPEN!
We’re pleased to announce that the Black Rock Arts Foundation’s Annual Grant Cycle is OPEN! Proposals will be accepted from today, February 14th through March 31st at 5:00 p.m.

The Black Rock Arts Foundation funds interactive, community-based art projects across the country and around the world. Our hope is to support artists in collaborating with people in their own communities to create art projects that change the way people experience one another and the public spaces they share. PLEASE NOTE: The Black Rock Arts Foundation operates only in communities outside of BRC and does
NOT fund art for the playa. Previously granted projects can be viewed at: http://www.blackrockarts.org/grants

The Black Rock Arts Foundation has provided grants ranging from $500 to $7,000, with the average being about $2,500. For more information about submission guidelines, the 2007 Application, and answers to Frequently Asked Questions, please visit:
www.blackrockarts.org/grants/2007-grant-cycle-application or, call Hale at 415.626.1248.

2) ScrapEden SF Grant Review
Many thanks to all of you that submitted proposals for ScrapEden SF. The Grants Team is hard at work and will announce awards no later than Friday, February 23rd. Stay tuned as this exciting pilot project unfolds: http://www.blackrockarts.org/projects/scrapeden-sf

3) Detroit Dream Temple Project
In May of 2007 a temple will be built in Detroit, Michigan – and that can be said with certainty! The Detroit Dream Team and temple-builder David Best are partnering with local non-profit Motor City Blight Busters (http://blightbusters.org/) to realize this long-awaited project.

The Detroit Temple is, at present, a temporary installation that will be constructed out of discarded auto parts and installed in a Detroit neighborhood in need of some love.

The Black Rock Arts Foundation is honored to be involved with, and to provide support for, this project as we feel it reflects the core of our mission. The Foundation will work to apply much of what it has learned installing temporary exhibitions in San Francisco to the Detroit Dream Project and hopes to extend the collaborative lessons learned to more communities. The Foundation has agreed to provide up to $15,000 in matching funds for this project! If you would like to contribute to the Detroit Dream Temple Project, please lend your support by making a donation today: www.donatetoblackrockarts.org/detepr.html

Check back with the Black Rock Arts Foundation homepage for regular updates on this incredible project: www.blackrockarts.org

4) Quadrapass, USA
In 2006 the Black Rock Arts Foundation granted ‘Africa Burns’ – a 3-day art and music festival scheduled for July 20-22, 2007 just north of Cape Town, South Africa. Granted funds will help support the creation of ‘Quadrapass’ – a central sculpted fire vessel to be constructed over a series of public workshops held in South Africa, and led by artists Charlie Smith and Jamie Ladet. http://www.blackrockarts.org/grants/2006-grant-recipients/quadrapass/

To help garner funds and support for this incredible international art project Charlie and Jamie are building a U.S.A. version of the project and are seeking both workshop participants, and funders.
Please visit their website, http://www.howhowhow.com for more information on how you can help realize this amazing project.

5) REALLY, In Search of a Volunteer Web Master
The Black Rock Arts Foundation is in search of a dedicated volunteer Web Master who can help us maintain a site with up to date information on our many dynamic projects. If you’re fluent in CSS and HTML we would welcome your help! Plone, Python and Mailman are extra credit.

We’re dog-tired of our website lagging behind real-time and exciting developments. If you’d like to help change the world one interactive art installation at the time, please write to hale@blackrockarts.org or give us a call at the office 415.626.1248.

6) Bay Area Events

2nd Annual Chiditarod

The Second Annual Chiditarod 2007
The most epic shopping cart race in Chicago
March 3rd, 2007
www.chiditarod.org

LEAVE NO TRACE.

Here ye! Here ye! Distribute far and wide. The Second Annual
Chiditarod approaches!

What is it?

The Chiditarod is Chicago’s very own Urban Iditarod. The Alaskan
Iditarod is an annual dogsled race that begins on March 3rd, 2007. The
Chiditarod is an artistic spin on this yearly event; instead of dogs, we
have costumed humans. Instead of the Alaskan tundra, we will race
through the cold Chicago streets. And instead of sleds, teams compete
for glory using tricked out shopping carts.

When is it?

The race is on Saturday, March 3rd, 2007. Registration starts at 11 am
and the race begins at 12:30 pm. The race will last as long as you do.

Where is it?

The roughly 4 mile race begins at the corner of Hubbard and Wolcott (Map
- http://tinyurl.com/38nh8d) at 12:30 pm SHARP. Racers will trek
through the Ukrainian Village / Wicker Park / Bucktown neighborhoods.
There will be a few checkpoints, most of which are bars.

Where should I watch the race?

Wait! Why do you want to watch?? PARTICIPATE INSTEAD!! But if you're
set on watching, since the location of the checkpoints remains a
surprise up until the day of the race, we can't really tell you
exactly where to watch. We will say this, however. The race will be
contained by:

* Armitage on the North
* Lake on the South
* Halsted on the East
* Oakley on the West

Why should I do this?

Because it's the most fun thing you'll do all winter. Last year's race
was met with overwhelmingly positive response from the community,
participants, checkpoints, press, and the recipients of over 900 pounds
of collected food. We had 22 teams and we are expecting even more this
year! Feeling the first onset of cabin fever? Ready to break the
monotony of Chicago winter? In addition to getting people out of the
house on a Saturday in March for a bit of merriment and exercise, it
provides an opportunity to stretch your creative muscles – creativity is
an essential ingredient for this event. In addition to cash prizes for
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place there is a substantial prize for “best in show”.
There are also prizes for best cart A/V system, bling, wipeout,
SABOTAGE, and more. The race will also encourage street theater via
interactions with spectators, checkpoint patrons, and the wonderful,
cheerful people of Chicago along the start, end, checkpoints, and along
the route itself. Photographers and camera crews will record the event,
so be on your best and worst behavior, and bring your toys. Lastly, the
race will bring
together many different Chicago communities including cyclists, artists,
activists, students, children, burners, adults, business folk, and
everyone in-between.

Any other reasons?

In addition, and perhaps most importantly, the Chiditarod aims to give
back to the communities that
share its route by collecting food for local food banks. The Chiditarod
is the first urban Iditarod to do as such. Each team is required to end
the race with at least 15 POUNDS of non-perishable food in their cart.
This food will then be donated to local organizations. Oh, and yes –
there’s a cash prize for most food collected and BEST FOOD PRESENTATION,
too. Last year the Chiditarod raised over 900 pounds of food. This
year the goal is ONE TON of Food!!

What’s next?

Build your team of 5 racers! Get a cart! Chop it up! Trick it out!
Start saving that $25 entry fee! Send this announcement far and wide!

The latest rules, information, prize lists, and registration can be
found on the Chiditarod website:

http://www.chiditarod.org.

Wait - I want to volunteer!

Awesome. We can use all the help we can get. If you want to volunteer,
please use the volunteer sign up form located on the website.

Prepare for glory! See you on race day!

Mush,
Chiditarod

This weekend!!! SynchroniCity presentsThe4thAnnual X

> > Attention!!!
> >
> > Burners, fire spinners, freaks, artists,
> > lovers/loathers of Christmas, pyros and miscreants...
> >
> >
> > Each year during these bleak winter months, we gather
> > up two or three hundred discarded X-Mass Trees, build
> > an evergreen sculpture, crack open kegs and light a
> > huge-ass fire.
> >
> > Friends gather, jackassery ensues, fire happens,
> > people feel ways about stuff, and the catharsis keeps
> > us all giddy and warm for the rest of winter.
> >
> > Want to join us for the tree flambe?
> >
> > It's free, awesome and we've been gathering trees
> > since Xmas. Come on down.
> >
> > When:
> >
> > This Saturday, January 27th, 2007
> > Sundown - Approx. 2:00 A.M.
> > @ the Wildlife Refuge
> > in Kansasville, WI
> >
> >
> > Where:
> >
> > An hour's drive from Chicago, just north of the
> > Wisconsin border.
> >
> >
> > HOW CAN YOU HELP?
> > If you or anyone you know has an X-mas tree they wish
> > to torch, bring it.
> >
> > We are also putting out an APB for fire spinners.
> > disposal. SynchroniCity will have a grill and some
> > food available as well. All participants are

Temple of Light- two things stolen- canyouhelp?

Please reply to amaniellen@gmail.com or seattle@burningman.com -- AND THANKS!

The Temple crew needs your help.

It's just (as in the last five minutes) come to my attention that something
bad happened at the Temple of Light.
It appears that the bench that was with the installation on the playa,
walked away. This bench was hand-made with love, along with five other
benches, for the families of the shooting victims at the 2112 house. As many
of you know, these benches were part of the installation at the Seattle
Center. They were never intended to go to the playa, but because one of the
fathers of the victims lives in Albany, NY and was joining us on the playa,
we brought it to him in the desert. It was out of the goodness and hugeness
of his heart that he put the bench out at the Temple for the week of the
event, and let people sit on it, write on it, rest with it.

The day of the burn was pretty chaotic, and we knew the bench was missing,
but we thought we heard that a friend of the crew had taken it to tend to
it, and it was okay. We now know that isn't the case. We've just recently
heard from this parent that he doesn't have the bench, and we're so sad that
we don't know where it is. We're hoping that someone out here in the
community took it to take care of it and would like to return it to its
rightful owner. If you know of the bench's whereabouts and can help us out,
we'd greatly appreciate it, as it is a one-of-a-kind item, a gift to a
grieving father, not 'just another piece of art'.

Some time over the course of the burn, a bell went missing from the temple.
It was a beloved bell, belonging to the same parent whose bench is missing.

Here are pictures of each:
the bench:
will be very grateful to recover them. Thank you very much.

Mardi Gras Burner Ball in SW Michigan

Hey yall. Just sending out a heads up for an event rapidly converging for February 24th. Its an all night Mardi Gras Burner Ball to be held at the Beautiful Acorn Theatre in Three Oaks, MI(www.acorntheater.com/) about 75 minutes from Chicago/3.5 hrs from Detroit near Lake Michigan. This event sprung up from the Great Lakes Regional Burner list(go to groups.google.com/group/Lakes-Of-Fire to join if ya want, we'd love to have ya). We wanted to throw a winter event that would draw people from all over the midwest and thought the Acorn which is between Detroit and Chicago would be perfect(esp. since the owners are Burners!). Anyway we have been reving up the plans and lots of great things are happening. Lots of great creative people have gotten involved and the energy is already alive. I can feel the vortex already beginning to open! If anyone can make it we are having an organizational meeting at the Acorn on February 18th at 8pm.There is definitly room for creative contribution so if you want to get involved please jump on the Lakes of fire email list at the link above. More info to follow, I just wanted to get up a post so people can save the date. If you have ever been to the Acorn you know what a perfect spot this is for a party. Hope to see ya there

I just moved back to ann arbor, from santa cruz, to take care of my sick mom and her mess of a life and would be really stoked to find some family in the area. it kinda looks like we, the burners, aren't quite a large enough group to really through big parties around here but... I know there are some of you though, because i was at nexus last burn and next door was the black rock housing department. so, i'm looking to get down, and iff there are events in the works i am overflowing with energy that would love to be put towards, well, just about anything. love you all,

I'm flying into Detroit-Wayne airport Tomorrow (Thursday 12/21) night. I'm picking up a rental car and ultimately driving to Indiana. I'm arriving just after midnight (into Friday morning), and it would be really cool to get some drinks with some Detroit burners. A crash space for the night would be super great. Otherwise, I'll drive from the airport directly to Indiana, and get to my mom's around 4am.

Thanks for reading!

WI Decomp 12/16/06

A message from the Wisconsin Regional Contact for the Burning Man Project

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We are pleased to announce our official Wisconsin Winter Decompression Party, Saturday 12/16, 9pm, at the BurningSNOW Center, 2578 N. Weil Street Milwaukee, WI 53212.

If you have never been to one of our decompression events, you should! This is how it works:

You enter a decommodified zone in the midst of a commodified society. There is no vending, advertising, or anything for sale. Instead there is gifting. Everyone is encouraged to bring a gift, which could be a poem or song, an exotic liqueur or food treat, a prototype for glowing electronic clothing; a massage chair, a dance, an experimental art-piece... you name it, right on up to a mini-Theme-Camp that creates an immersive and interactive environment. The gifts and ideas are freely shared so you bring one gift, but experience the cultural gifts of everybody. Like a cultural potluck where you can take all the fascinating ideas home with you ...)
Radical Self-Expression is encouraged and a Leave No Trace ethic is practiced: be prepared to pack out every object you brought in. Just like in the desert.

There will be live music and performances, demonstrations of fire arts, and a large collection of experimental and interactive artworks that have been to Burning Man. Our goal is full participation but we welcome and respect the newcomer who just wants to attend and find out what it's all about.

Our Tiny Friendly Stage is available for your self-expression; we also have a few little booth-like stands available if you want to try your hand at a mini-theme camp. Erotic cookie exchange? Ultraviolet Bindis drawn on the head? Ten-second headphone sample of Really Bad Music? I Dare You to Eat This Haggis camp? Debate with Buddha camp? Sex toy ring toss? I know we have some very creative minds out there... RSVP with your idea, whatever it is, and we will set you up with a booth as long as they last.

To reserve a ticket, (quantities limited) write to party@clevian.com with the word "exhaust" in the Subject line, and the full names of who is coming in the body of the message. Also give us a hint of what you might be bringing, so we can make room for it if necessary. When you arrive with your picture ID your ticket will be waiting at the Will-Call stand. Donation $10 or $5 with a gnarly costume. Certain performers, theme camps, and setup crew can get in free; write for details. Very limited crashout space available for out-of-town visitors, write for details.

Even if you've been here before and are already member, please RSVP again anyway so we can plan for who is coming.
This event is legal, decommodified, and adheres to the ten principles of Burning Man.

Burner Peter Brown made a web site to encourage folks to "play
reality" like a game, issue challenges to each other and show proof
of cool things you've done, etc., not too surprisingly there are a
lot of burners in it.

Check out out:
http://www.realityallstarz.com/

Two of the challenges are "go to burning man"
http://www.realityallstarz.com/challenges/11/show

and "build a burning man theme camp":

Haddn't seen it posted yet- thought I'd just give a heads up if ya didn't already see it on the Yahoo groups MI_BM list:

Theme: The Future
> Date: Saturday, October 7 through Sunday
> Time: Major setup on Friday, otherwise noon on Saturday (for
afternoon fun) till lunch on Sunday
> Location: Yale, Michigan, on private land (close to the I-69
freeway and the border with Canadia)

There are still things to help out with and volunteer for from what I understand. But the full details of that are on the yahoo groups list.

If anyone is interested in carpooling to this, I'd love to pitch in on it.

1 luv,

Hi everyone, I created this tribe and "moderate" it. Unfortunately, I became quite ill right after creating it, and haven't been able to do much work with it. Please forward invitations to your ....special freaky friends...so that they can join :) feel free to message me directly through tribe. If you are interested, and have not done so already, join the Michigan burning man email list.
